Chemical engineering is stream of engineering where the application of physical science like chemistry and physics, and life sciences as biology, microbiology and biochemistry along with mathematics, to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms is done. Moreover than producing useful materials, modern chemical engineering is also related to pioneering valuable new materials and techniques like as nanotechnology, fuel cells and biomedical engineering. Chemical engineering on a broader context includes the design, improvement and maintenance of processes intermixing chemical or biological transformations for a very big manufacture. Chemical engineers take care of the steps as to make certain that chemical processes are operated safely, sustainably and economically. Chemical engineers in this branch are generally works as a process engineer. A related term with a wider definition is chemical technology. A person employed in this field is called a chemical engineer.

Chemical engineering has its practical usage in preparing a range of products and services. The chemical industry has a large scope in creating and developing inorganic and organic industrial chemicals and petrochemicals, agrochemicals, plastics, elastomers, oleochemicals, explosives, ceramics, dietary supplements fuels detergents and detergent products, fragrances and flavors, additives, and pharmaceuticals.

The basis of chemical engineering as according to principles of science is conservation of mass, conservation of momentum and conservation of energy. The movement of mass and energy around a chemical process are evaluated applying mass balances and energy balances, laws that apply to discrete parts of equipment, unit operations, or an entire plant. In the process chemical engineers do also use principles of thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, fluid mechanics and transport phenomena. These tasks now are tested on complex software models known as process simulators.

As in the modern period chemical engineering is playing much extensive role. Chemical engineers are now involved into the development and production of different range of products as well as in commodity and specialty chemicals. The category of these products of modern age includes high performance materials like aerospace, automotive, biomedical, electronic, environmental, space and military applications. Some of the examples of these products are fabrics, dye-sensitized solar cells, adhesives and composites for vehicles ultra-strong fibers, bio-compatible materials for implants and prosthetics, gels for medical applications, pharmaceuticals, and films with special dielectric, optical or spectroscopic properties for opto-electronic devices.

More chemical engineering is also intermixed with biology and biomedical engineering. It also has been observed that many chemical engineers work into biological projects like as biopolymers (proteins) and mapping the human genome. With expansion of technology the line between chemists and chemical engineers is fading away and more and more chemical engineers applying their knowledge and learning into innovation.

Chemical engineering is a field is a dynamic field that is constantly growing and changing and for this reason, if you have chosen it as your career path, it is important to ensure that you get a masters degree. This will keep you at par with competitors in the same field once you get into the job market. In essence, a Masters in chemical engineering program is designed to prepare students with by impartation of mathematical and scientific principles.

These are supposed to be applied in the development and operation evaluation of systems that are supposed to be used for chemical processes. These might include kinetic systems, heat and mass transfer system, conservation of energy among others. In addition to this, students also learn how to analyze chemical problems such as fluid mechanics, corrosion and loss of energy among others.

At this point, it is important to state that once you have decided to pursue this masters, then you should start working on finding the most viable college or school to enroll in. Ideally, this should not be a problem since there are several online schools that offer the same. However, it is important to ensure that you weigh a couple of considerations before making your selection.

For starters, it is important to state that different schools offer different modules and for this reason, you should work towards ensuring that you choose those that match up to your strengths and career aspirations. Secondly, it is ideal to note that the program description will vary from one school to another. For instance, while there are those that provide 12 month courses divided into 3 semesters, there are those that are divided into longer durations. For this reason, you should choose programs that suit your needs best.

It is important to state that the programs aim can be broken down into two major points. These include:

Provision of advanced education in chemical engineering designed to explore the wider aspects of research and scholarship and especially in the field of chemical engineering. Additionally, students also learn how to use advanced applications in the field and use computer aided engineering processes.

It also helps students interested in advancing to chartered status

Depending on the school one chooses, it is important to state that some of the topics covered in the chemical engineering syllabus include; advanced reaction engineering, process control, transport processes , design and process synthesis among others. Before choosing a school, you should note that there are certain requirements you must meet and for this reason, you must work towards finding what these are and whether or not you are eligible. Whichever school you choose, remember this is the first step towards ensuring that you realize your career aspirations and get your dream job in the chemical engineering industry.
